PIERRE CAMPANA PERFECTS HIS DRIVING SKILLS AT THE AUTO SPORT ACADEMY Photo NewsThe recently named driver of the FFSA’s Rally Team France, Pierre Campana, along with his co-driver Sabrina de Castelli caused a sensation at last weekend’s 63rd Rallye Mont Blanc Morzine, taking their first championship victory in the French Rally series aboard the Mini John Cooper Works WRC.

Just two days later, the Corsican rally driver came to the Auto Sport Academy and discovered a brand new car for the very first time – the car of the federal training centre! In early August, the FFSA named Pierre Campana as lead of the Rally Team France that has seen in the past such names as Nicolas Bernardi, Stephane Sarrazin, Alexandre Bengue and of course both Sebastiens – Ogier and Loeb. In this role, he benefits from among other things a training programme co-ordinated by the Auto Sport Academy.

So, on the Bugatti circuit at Le Mans, just a few miles from the Academy premises, Pierre Campana took control of the car used by student drivers in the French F4 championship. As this was a first gor him, the aim was first to optimise his feelings and sensations at the wheel of the car before moving onto improving braking.

"It was really a great experience. I had a lot to learn with the car at the Bugatti circuit. I had never even driven around a circuit, so it was a first for me. The day was very rewarding because it allowed me to make progress on some issues with my overall driving, especially with the braking about which the instructors gave me valuable advice. By late afternoon, I felt very comfortable and I got a good feeling with the car, which I found very well balanced. It is perfect to learn and refine driving style; I was pleasantly surprised and I hope to return soon to continue the work we started,” said Campana.

This is not the first time a rally driver has joined the Auto Sport Academy to work with the Formula Academy since Sebastien Ogier has regularly visited since August 5. Last year, he also recommended that Turkish driver Burcu Cetinkaya came to benefit from the advice and expertise of the academy.

Since the beginning of the year, Polish driver Maciej Oleksowicz, who takes part in the European Rally Championship, and Belgian Alexandre Romain, who takes part in the Belgian Rally Championship, have both been able to improve their driving skills at the centre.

As has been mentioned in the past, Nicolas Deschaux, President of the FFSA said: “The very purpose of the Auto Sport Academy training centre is to be open to all. Not only the youngest hopes to which we focus our efforts each year, but also to experienced drivers, in order for them to constantly improve.”

Following Rallye Deutschland, where the young Corsican Campana fully achieved his objectives to finish the rally and make progress stage by stage, ultimately finishing in 18th position overall, he will contest another round of the 2011 World Rally Championship, Rallye de France Alsace from September 30 to October 2.
