PIERRE CAMPANA IN CONTENTION FOR SOLID PODIUM AFTER SECOND DAY OF RALLYE DU VAR
The second day of this weekend’s Rallye du Var has delivered the expected increase in performance level from Pierre Campana, as the young Corsican driver leaps to third place on the overall standings after an impressive display on Saturday.
Pierre started the rally in a deliberately cautious manner on Friday, securing himself a fine fourth position after the opening four stages. Together with the Drive-Pro team, Pierre has adopted an intelligent approach to ensure he can extract the maximum performance out of himself, as well as the MINI John Cooper Works WRC car throughout the three days.
This morning began with a repeat run of three of yesterday’s stages – Pignans, Bormes les Mimosas and La Môle – with Pierre demonstrating another solid performance, very close to the pace of WRC star Jari-Matti Latvala.
The final two long stages of the day required drivers to negotiate the tough terrain of the 32km Vidauban stage followed by an equally challenging 33km stage Collobrières. Pierre really came into his own for these two stages. Tackling the harsh route of the Vidauban stage, Pierre was on a flyer. Fearing he had picked up a puncture due to rough course layout in the third part of the stage, Pierre backed off but was still able to claim second on the stage and elevate himself to third overall.
The final stage was similarly positive and although Pierre adopted a set-up for his car that was too stiff for the course, he cemented his third place which he sets out to defend – and even improve upon – on Sunday.
Pierre will use all his acquired experience from today’s long stages since they will form the backbone for the final day, coming after the shorter La Garde Freinet stage. It will be a long run to the end of the rally with 75km off stages still to complete but the podium is well and truly in Pierre’s sights if he continues with the sort of assertive driving he has shown so far.
Pierre Campana said: “I am really delighted with how this second day has concluded for me and the Drive-Pro team. We started today with a repeat of the three final stages from yesterday so it allowed me to put some of that experience to good use. We still were not at the maximum but it was definitely another good result to set us up for the far more crucial afternoon stages. The two long stages, each over 30km, were important to get right and I think we did a good job. The Vidaubam stage is tough and there is always a risk of puncture or making a mistake in the third part of the stage with the challenging surface. I actually thought I had picked up a puncture during that third part of the stage and that affected my confidence to attack, but we still took the second fastest time which took us up to third overall. We perhaps used a set-up that was slightly too stiff for the final stage so I was pleased with fourth, which gives us a good position heading into the final day. The MINI John Cooper Works WRC car has performed competitively all rally and I’m really confident of pushing for the podium tomorrow, which would be a good result considering the WRC level we are rallying at this weekend.”
