PIERRE CAMPANA ENJOYS GOOD START TO RALLYE DU VAR WEEKEND
Corsican sensation Pierre Campana has started his third Rallye du Var event in promising fashion finishing the opening four stages of the weekend’s 12 stage event in fourth position with plenty more to give.
With a number of World Rally Championship stars taking part, this year’s Rallye du Var has taken on a real mini-WRC feel, raising the level for all competitors.
Pierre is utilising his recent successes with the Drive-Pro team and the MINI John Cooper Works WRC car and putting his accrued experience to good use around the Rallye du Var course.
Friday’s four stages have been run without a service break which has put reliability at a premium. As such, Pierre and the team have set a deliberately cautious approach for this opening day of the three-day event.
Pierre had to adopt a particularly careful driving style in the opening Gonfaron and Pignans stages since his new brake pads had not completely bedded in. He nonetheless set the fourth best time in both stages to be within touching distance of the rally leader, WRC veteran Jari-Matti Latvala.
A competitive performance in the third stage, the 10.5km Bormes Les Mimosas, saw Pierre take third place just 1.8s adrift of Latvala, while a quick final stage, the 7.6km La Môle, resulted in an excellent time only 0.8s off the WRC man’s pace.
Heading into what promises to be a long and gruelling second day with a repeat of three of today’s stages followed by two extremely long stages each over 30km in length, there is all to play for. A solid performance today leaves Pierre in optimistic spirits.
Pierre Campana said: “I’m very happy with the outcome of today’s first four stages, the start of what is a really long rally. Our plan was to conclude this first day with a solid and trouble-free run. We had no service in between stages today so it has been important to bring the car home and not make any errors. We had to take extra care in the first two stages to allow the brakes to bed in fully but when we were up to speed for the third and fourth stages, we were on good pace and right on the tail of our WRC benchmark. We will attack tomorrow’s stages with more confidence and look to close the gap during the final two 30km stages. It’s been a good start and together with Sabrina and the Drive-Pro team, I am confident for an equally competitive day on Saturday with the fantastic MINI John Cooper Works WRC car.”
