OAK RACING WITHDRAWS #15 LMP1 ENTRY FROM SPA 1000KM Photo NewsThe OAK Racing team has been forced to withdraw its #15 LMP1 car from today’s Spa 1000km after Matthieu Lahaye suffered a big accident in qualifying on Friday. The decision means that Pierre Ragues will not contest today’s race.

Lahaye had already set a competitive qualifying lap to place the OAK-Pescarolo eighth on the provisional grid but he made contact with a Formula Le Mans Car which sent him into the Armco barrier on his second lap. Thankfully, Matthieu’s condition has not given cause for concern despite the serious nature of his crash, although he remains in hospital, and Pierre’s best wishes are with his team-mate.

While the OAK-Pescarolo prototype held together well despite the violence of the impact, fulfilling its key role of protecting the driver, the team was unable to repair the car in time for the race.

The OAK Racing team had shown competitive pace around the demanding Spa-Francorchamps track with Lahaye’s first lap in qualifying already good enough for a top eight start. The team was therefore looking forward to a strong race in Spa this afternoon and to continue its generally positive start to the Intercontinental Le Mans Cup season.

Pierre Ragues said: “First of all, I’d like to send my warmest wishes to Matthieu after his accident yesterday. Thankfully, his condition does not appear to be as bad as it could have been after such a crash but we wish him a quick recovery and look forward to welcoming him back in the team as soon as possible. The severity of damage to the car meant that the team would not have been able to carry out all repairs in time for the race, so we have had to withdraw from the race. It’s a shame after the initial performance that we showed in practice but it was the right decision. Matthieu’s qualifying lap before his crash, setting the eighth fastest time straight out of the box, was a very good indicator of our potential. I have not had much time in the OAK-Pescarolo around Spa but I had a good feel from the car and was looking forward to another good performance. We will now move our focus onto the Le Mans 24 Hours which takes place next month and do all we can to make up for a disappointing weekend here in Spa.”
