FRANCK MAILLEUX AIMING TO CONTINUE LMP2 PODIUM RUN IN SPA Photo NewsFranck Mailleux is aiming to continue the podium-winning start to his 2011 Intercontinental Le Mans Cup season at this weekend’s 1000km of Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium.

Signatech-Nissan had dominated the LMP2 class of the 12 Hours of Sebring in March but were robbed of almost certain victory after experiencing technical trouble during the gruelling race. Nonetheless, the sheer pace of the Dunlop-shod Oreca 03 car with Nissan power saw the team stage a valiant fightback to earn themselves a very positive second place and debut LMP2 podium result together.

The team’s competitive pace continued to resonate at the recent Official Le Mans test day with Franck setting the fastest LMP2 time during the session to reaffirm the team’s credentials as LMP2 front-runners this season.

The Spa-Francorchamps circuit is a popular motorsport venue for fans and drivers alike. Situated in the heart of Belgium’s Ardennes forest, the circuit is extremely fast, undulating and a great test of man and machine with the notorious Eau Rouge still posing its unique challenges to this day.

The 7.004km track comprises 21 turns, including well known names such as Eau Rouge, La Source, Bus Stop and Blanchimont. A 1000km race has been held at Spa on and off since 1966 with this year’s event marking the ninth consecutive 1000km of Spa.

As second round of this season’s ILMC calendar, Franck and Signatech-Nissan will also be using this weekend’s event as a key opportunity to evaluate their technical package with the prestigious 24 Hours of Le Mans, which is next up on the schedule after Spa.

The fickle Belgian weather can often dictate proceedings during any motorsport event with rain a well known fan of race weekends, so teams will be keeping an eye on the track and an eye towards the skies!

Franck Mailleux: “Like most drivers, Spa is one of my favourite tracks, even if the technological advances made to today’s race cars have helped make the driver’s life a bit easier. We have enjoyed a generally positive start to our 2011 campaign. The outright pace of the Signatech-Nissan Oreca 03 has been impressive and we showed in Sebring that we have the competitiveness required to do well this year. A few technical problems prevented us from capitalising on the potential at Sebring but we still achieved a podium result which was very pleasing. The team, Nissan and Dunlop have performed exceptionally well so far and I expect that we will have a good weekend in Spa. There will be a huge number of cars taking part this weekend because it is the final race opportunity before Le Mans, so there will be a lot of quick guys out there. We have to remain confident in our abilities and look to add another podium result, if not push for the LMP2 victory. We will do our best to achieve that.”
