CAMPANA DOMINATES RALLY D'ALPI ORIENTALI Photo NewsUp-and-coming French star Pierre Campana has dominated his category on the Rally d'Alpi Orientali based in Udine: a challenging three-day Italian asphalt event that he using to prepare for the world-famous Sanremo Rally at the end of the month.

The Rally d'Alpi Orientali, which has held partly in bad weather this year, is a round of the Italian Rally Championship and also a scoring event of the Italian Clio R3 Trophy.

Driving his Renault Clio R3 run by the Munaretto team and backed by innovative French simulator company Ellip6, Pierre took the class lead on the first proper stage of the rally and never relinquished it until the finish. In the end, he won the class by nearly 40 seconds, classified an excellent 12th overall.

The rally was characterised by rainy conditions, but Pierre made the correct tyre choices to enjoy a commanding advantage throughout. After the opening superspecial in Udine on Thursday night, he chose intermediate tyres on Friday morning and actually led the rally overall after SS2: the first time that a Renault Clio R3 has claimed the overall lead of an international event!

He remained on intermediate tyres for the rest of the day, finishing the first full leg with a commanding margin of more than half a minute. On the second day conditions were drier, and Pierre was able to use slick tyres all day. He controlled his advantage against tough opposition to end the rally with a resounding class victory and a 37.2 second cushion over his nearest adversary, after 14 stages totalling 167.94 competitive kilometres.

"It was pretty much the perfect rally for us," said the 25-year-old at the finish, co-driven as always by his fellow Corsican Sabrina de Castelli. "The car felt great even in the difficult conditions of Friday, we made the right tyre choices and we steered clear of mistakes. It was also a fantastic feeling to be leading an international rally overall for the first time, which is a first for the Renault Clio R3 as well! This result has given me the confidence I need heading into Sanremo, where we won the category last year. Obviously the objective this year will be to do the same again. I'd like to thank the Munaretto team and especially Ellip6, without whose loyal support this would not have been possible."

Pierre will now concentrate on fitness training back home in Corsica before heading to Sanremo for round 10 of the Intercontinental Rally Challenge from 23-25 September.
