FATHER AND SON ROAD TRIP AS PIERRE AND MARCEL RAGUES START THE TOUR AUTO CLASSIC
Pierre is back in competitive action this week but will be joined by a very familiar face in the cockpit – his father Marcel, as the father and son pairing compete in the legendary Tour Auto Classic road race.
The Ragues will be taking part in a 1960 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint during the week-long event which starts in Paris today (Tuesday). With Pierre at the wheel of the classic car and Marcel on co-driving duties, it will be a true family effort as they take part in a competition from the north of France to the south against around 230 other teams from around the world.
Paris the starting point after a day of scrutineering at Grand Palais on Monday. The destination for the first stage will be Beaune. Wednesday moves from Beaune to Aix-les-Bains, while Thursday’s destination will be Clermont Ferrand. Friday will see the race move to Nîmes before Saturday’s finale sees competitors head to Nice for the conclusion of this fascinating and much loved event.
Since its creation in 1992, the event, which emulates the Tour de France Automobile, has always started from Paris and takes in a route of some 2,000km divided into five days of separate stages, covering a gruelling course that puts reliability and endurance at its heart. Thus, it will be the perfect opportunity for Pierre to showcase his abilities in this field ahead of his debut race in the World Endurance Championship at Spa-Francorchamps in just two weeks’ time.
Pierre said: “We could already feel the anticipation and excitement building during yesterday’s scrutineering at Grand Palais, so I am pleased to get into the competition properly today with the first stage from Paris. Taking part in this famous event is made even more special with the fact I am driving alongside my father. It promises to be a fantastic but tough event and I will enjoy driving our Alfa Romeo from Paris all the way to Nice, where we expect to end the event on Saturday. It’s an event that puts an importance on the endurance element, something I am very familiar with!”
