PIERRE CAMPANA ENDS OPENING DAY OF TOUR DE CORSE WITH STUNNING STAGE WIN
Corsican rally sensation Pierre Campana has ended the opening day of this weekend’s Tour de Corse, an official round of the Intercontinental Rally Challenge, with a sublime win in the Sarrola-Plage de Liamone stage.
Following a gradual start to the event in his Peugeot 207 S2000, run by the Munaretto team, Pierre and his co-pilot Sabrina de Castelli gained momentum in time for the final stage of the day to lead the stage classification and to end the day in a fighting third place overall, just behind WRC star Dani Sordo.
Pierre completed the opening stage of the day, the 25.89km run from Pénitencier Coti to Agosta Plage in a solid fifth place, around 10 seconds from the early pace-setter, before completing the second special stage in seventh. Pierre reported significant tyre wear during the two stages as well as issues with the brakes. Both issues will be investigated by the team at service on Friday morning ahead of the second day.
The Corsican driver, competing on home ground for this legendary Tour de Corse, changed two tyres for the final stage and stunned the field to claim final stage victory honours and to end the day on podium pace.
Five stages make up the middle day of action for this 55th Tour de Corse with four separate stages until the mid-afternoon and a repeated stage from Erbajolo to Pont d’Altiani concluding the second day. The first run of this stage will be broadcast live on Eurosport from 11.00 CET. The rally will cover a total distance of nearly 115km tomorrow, so Pierre will be aiming both for competitiveness and reliability over the course of the day to consolidate a podium place.
Pierre Campana said: “After the testing and the shakedown, it was great to get the Tour de Corse underway in earnest this morning. It was a difficult start to the event because from the start of the day we were experiencing some problems with tyre wear and some issues with the brakes. In the first stages this was particularly tough because of the downhill sections. After the second stage, we changed two tyres as planned and we were able to perform very well to claim a fantastic stage win and end the day in third place. We have shown that we are on the pace of the leaders but we have to continue working hard to prepare for tomorrow and hope for a more trouble-free day of rallying. I cannot express enough how much I am honoured to be part of this fantastic event in front of a home crowd and with such support from Munaretto, Peugeot and all my partners and supporters. We’ll be hoping to consolidate our podium place tomorrow.”
