FRANCK MAILLEUX AND SIGNATECH-NISSAN LOOK TO TAKE ONE STEP CLOSER TO LMP2 TITLE AT ROAD ATLANTA
Intercontinental Le Mans Cup LMP2 championship leaders Franck Mailleux and Signatech-Nissan are hoping to extend their grip over the 2011 title yet further as they embark on their debut trip to Road Atlanta for Petit Le Mans next weekend.
The Nissan-powered squad has been in impressive form this season and has claimed a healthy three podium finishes in class throughout this season, but the team is hoping for an impressive return to the rostrum after a difficult Silverstone 6 Hours that nonetheless allowed them extend their lead of the LMP2 championship.
For Franck, this latest stateside adventure will recall the impressive performance at the season opening race in Sebring back in March in which he and his team-mates finished second in LMP2 having utterly dominated the class throughout the weekend. With the championship firmly in the team’s sights, a similar performance would deliver an American dream for the whole Signatech-Nissan squad, as well as tyre suppliers Dunlop and Franck’s personal sponsors Sojasun.
Franck will not have to wait until the race weekend to make his track debut at Road Atlanta with the Nissan powered Oreca 03 with the team set to take part in two days of testing starting from this weekend. The tests will allow the team to begin baseline set-up work and to allow the drivers valuable time behind the wheel around the 4.088km circuit.
Petit Le Mans has held an importance place on the endurance racing calendar for well over ten years having been included in the debut American Le Mans Series championship back in 1999. It appeared last year for the inaugural ILMC series but since Signatech-Nissan has only moved from LMS to ILMC this year, the coming week will inevitably throw up the odd challenge.
The race will be run over 1,600km but for a maximum of ten hours, less than the previous US race at Sebring but considerably more than European ILMC events at Spa, Imola and Silverstone.
Franck Mailleux said: “The result from Silverstone may have been frustrating but the performance of the car and my own driving gives me absolute confidence heading to Road Atlanta and the famous Petit Le Mans event. I have happy memories of our time racing at Sebring earlier in the year and although next weekend’s race will hold different challenges, I have a positive feeling from racing here in the States. We know we have a competitive LMP2 package so we just have to use the test days and the practice sessions to get ourselves in the best shape possible for the 1,000 mile race. Our closest championship rivals are not going to make our lives easy so we just have to remain focussed on the job in hand, aim for the podium which we know we are capable of, and extending our points lead that bit more. The entire team has performed exceptionally well this year and we must also thank our partners, including our tyre suppliers Dunlop and the support we get from Nissan. I’m also proud to have my friends at Sojasun to thank for their unwavering backing. We’re heading to the US to do everyone proud and I look forward to my first run in the Oreca 03 when testing gets underway.”
