FRANCK MAILLEUX AIMS FOR MORE 24 HOUR GLORY AT THE NURBURGRING Photo NewsFresh from his competitive performance at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, Franck Mailleux is set to embark on his second 24 hour endurance race in a fortnight, as he joins the Volkswagen Motorsport team for their assault on the Nürburgring this weekend.

Franck will take to the wheel of one of the all new Volkswagen Golf24 cars, the first time that Volkswagen Motorsport has competed with a works prepared Golf since 2007. Franck has been getting ready for this weekend’s challenge by helping the German manufacturer prepare the car in a number of VLN endurance races at the legendary Nürburgring track over the last few months.

Having been part of a triumphant LMP2 podium at Le Mans less than two weeks ago, Franck is determined to race to his highest ability in one of the most epic races around one of the most famous circuits in the world.

Franck has already taken part in the Nürburgring 24 Hours with Volkswagen Motorsport back when he raced a Scirocco to third in class and 20th place overall, as part of a five-car factory team effort in 2009.

More than 200 cars are set to line up for this weekend’s race with Franck aiming to prove his worth to Volkswagen Motorsport as they field three of these stunning new Golf24 cars. Powered by a 450-hp 2.5-litre five cylinder turbo engine, the Golf24 is equipped with four-wheel drive, a sequential 6-speed gearbox with paddle shifters and a spectacular body shell.

The Nürburgring was built in 1926-27 as the ultimate test of car and driver and has remained the benchmark ever since. For the 24-hour race the original 22.8-kilometre Nordschleife is linked up with sections of the modern Nürburgring Grand Prix circuit to make up an awe-inspiring 25-kilometre lap around the Eifel Mountains. Running from 4pm on Saturday to 4pm on Sunday, each driver is permitted a maximum of 150 minutes in each stint at the wheel, with a minimum of two hours of rest time between stints.

Franck said: “I have very fond memories of the Nürburgring 24 Hours from when I last joined Volkswagen Motorsport at the event in 2009. It was a fantastic event and one which has happy memories for me after finishing third in class. I am proud to be a part of the Volkswagen Motorsport line-up for this weekend, joining Peter Terting and Nicki Thiim in the #35 car. It is a testament to the faith that Volkswagen has placed in me so I am determined to give as much input as I can and to have a good race. There are 200,000 spectators each year for this event, so the atmosphere is truly amazing. We have had a good couple of races in the VLN championship with this new car, but the endurance event will take things to a whole new level, so I am excited to see how things unfold. Thanks to Volkswagen Motorsport for this opportunity, I am really looking forward to it.”
