LE MANS 24 HOURS UPDATE: MAILLEUX FIGHTS BACK FROM EARLY PUNCTURE
Le Mans, 18:00 Franck Mailleux had a great start to the 24 Hours of Le Mans this afternoon, retaining his LMP2 pole position in the opening hour of the race to lead the class comfortably.
Unfortunately, just ten laps into the race, he picked up a puncture and had to pit for new rear bodywork. The Signatech-Nissan team reacted quickly to get Franck back out on track, losing two laps in the process. Having dropped down the field quite considerably as a result of the unscheduled stop, Franck spent the remainder of his triple stint superbly making up positions.
The safety car period prevented Franck from capitalising on his performance advantage but his patience paid off when the race resumed, even if he reported vibration issues.
At the time of the team’s first driver swap, Franck had made up over 20 places to be back on the cusp of the top 20 with Lucas Ordonez taking over driving duties.
Franck Mailleux: “I had a good start and we were leading the LMP2 class after the first few laps but on lap 10, I got a puncture that forced me to pit in. The team worked excellently to minimise the time damage, but we lost two laps by changing the rear bodywork which dropped us down the order quite a lot. The safety car was out for a long time so I couldn’t do much. Thankfully Allan appears to be ok after his crash. When the safety car went in again, I had some vibration problems but I was able to make up places and position ourselves back towards the top 20 overall when Lucas took over. There is a long, long way to go yet, so we will just keep concentrated and make up time when we can.”
