LE MANS 24 HOURS UPDATE: PIERRE RAGUES GETS DOWN TO BUSINESS IN OPENING STINTS AS POWER STEERING PROBLEMS HAMPER PROGRESS
Le Mans, 18:00 Pierre Ragues got his fifth Le Mans 24 Hours race off to an ideal start by maintaining the team’s position in the busy and incident-filled opening hour of the race.
A nasty accident for one of the leading LMP1 cars caused a disrupted opening stint with deployment of the safety car. Thankfully, there appeared to be nobody appeared to be injured as a result of the crash, but the safety car was called out for removal of the wreckage and debris. While the safety car was out, Pierre experienced problems with his radio to the OAK Racing team which left him with no communication during the lengthy safety car phase.
When the race was resumed, the radio problems were resolved and Pierre could focus on continuing the team’s presence in the top ten. The handling of the OAK-Pescarolo was not completely perfect with Pierre reporting some understeer before the safety car phase, but a smooth driver changeover to Guillaue Moreau after almost two-and-a-half hours of running enabled to team to resume in 12th place.
Unfortunately just a few laps into his first stint, the car picked up a power steering problem which needed to be rectified back in the pit and the team was still dealing with the problem as the race entered the fourth hour.
Pierre Ragues: “It wasn’t the easiest of starts with the safety car, radio problems and some understeer in the car, but we have been able to stay where we wanted to be in this first phase of the race. Obviously, our thoughts are with Allan McNish after his big crash; thankfully it seems he is fine. The safety car period was tough for me because I couldn’t radio into the team, but the problem cured itself once the race resumed. Guillaume is out now and has had problems with the power steering but the team is working hard to sort that out so we can continue with our race.”
