CAMPANA CLAIMS SECOND IN RENAULT CLIO R3 CHAMPIONSHIP Photo NewsUp-and-coming Frenchman Pierre Campana has finished the year second in the Renault Clio R3 European Trophy: a series contested by some of the brightest young stars in rallying.

The 25-year-old Corsican came into the final round of the year in a position to win the series, but an accident on the Rallye du Var in the south of France last weekend meant that he was forced to settle for the runner-up spot: still an impressive achievement after six hard-fought rallies.

Pierre was aiming to end the season on a high, so he started the rally flat-out in order to pull out an impressive lead on the all-asphalt event, the final round of both the French Rally Championship and the Clio series. Pierre was even able to trade times with Citroen factory driver Sebastien Ogier, who made a guest appearance on the event.

Also making a high-profile appearance on the Rallye du Var was Pierre's sponsor Ellip6, which provides ground-breaking simulator experiences to the public at a centre close to the region where the Rallye du Var is run. In the service area in Sainte Maxime, Ellip6 had set up a simulator so that rally fans could try out the thrilling simulators for themselves.

Meanwhile, the Ellip6-liveried Renault Clio, run by the Italy-based Munaretto team, was out in front. The scene was set for Pierre, co-driven by Sabrina de Castelli, to pull off another spectacular victory on demanding stages that are also used for the world-famous Monte Carlo Rally. But unfortunately, on the second day of the event, he went off the road while pushing hard with slick tyres on a wet surface and was not able to get back onto the stage.

"Obviously I'm absolutely devastated," said Pierre. "I very much wanted to win the championship and because of that I was pushing hard. Unfortunately, we made a small mistake that had big consequences. Up to that point, it had been a perfect rally for us, despite the tough conditions. We come away with the runner-up spot in the championship, which is at least a consolation after a season that didn't go entirely to plan for us. I'd like to sincerely thank Ellip6 for their loyal support this year, without which none of this would have been possible. Now we will focus on 2011, so that we come back stronger than ever. We've learned a lot from this year, and I feel now that we're more than ready to take the next big step up."
